Charles "Chuck" Thomas Mizell Charles "Chuck" Thomas Mizell, 88, of Charlottesville, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2013. He was born on August 7, 1924, in Tarboro, North Carolina, to the late Charlie Mack Mizell and Annie Bailey Mizell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Doris Harris Mizell; and by four of his siblings. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Charles "Tom" Mizell Jr. and his wife, Suzanne, who was like a daughter to him, and Linda Maupin and her husband Kenneth, who was like a son to him. He is also survived by his brother, Nathan Mizell; his grandchildren, Tommy Mizell, Mike Mizell and his wife, Amanda, Clay Mizell and his wife, Kim, Amanda Goodrum and her husband, Seth, Brian Maupin, and Paul Maupin and his wife, Erin; and by his great- grandchildren, Emma, Lily, Nicholas, Lucas, and Chloe. Chuck grew up in Williamston, North Carolina, and was proud of his country boy roots, he was the oldest of six children, and spent much of his childhood working the tobacco fields with the family mule and with his grandfather, Pa Tom. After graduating from the Williamston High School he proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II on the Destroyer Escort 191,USS Coffman. After returning from the war he moved to Charlottesville, and he worked in the automotive industry, first at Harry A. Wrights then at Motor Specialty Company before later working at Maupin's Grocery. He enjoyed living beside Meade Park for over 60 years, he later moved to Mountainside Assisted Living in Crozet, where he enjoyed the fellowship of his neighbors. He was a member of both the VFW and the American Legion and enjoyed the annual Destroyer Escort Navy Conventions that he, Doris, and other family, attended where he was able to reconnect with old friends, and meet some new ones as well. He was also a long time member of the Charlottesville First Presbyterian Church where he had served in the choir, as a Deacon, an Elder, and taught both the children's and men's Sunday schools. The family extends their thanks to the kind and caring staff at Mountainside, Martha Jefferson Hospital, Health South, and Golden Living for their compassionate care. A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend David Forney officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday, February 10, 2013, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
