Elizabeth A. "Betty" Riems, 89, of Sandusky, passed away early Wednesday evening, Feb. 6, 2012, surrounded by her family in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Main Campus, Sandusky.

She was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Sandusky, daughter of the late Albert and Mabel (Bock) Royer. She graduated from Sandusky High School in 1940, the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing in 1945 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Toledo in 1946. Also, she did graduate studies at Bowling Green State University and Mary Manse College in Toledo.

Betty was an instructor at Providence School of Nursing for 25 years and prior to that was employed at Brown Hospital, Veterans Administration, Dayton, Ohio.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where she was active in the Bereavement Luncheon ministry, the Altar and Rosary Society, was a life member and past president of American Legion Post 83 Ladies Auxiliary, Erie County Salon Eight and Forty, the Cabane 50 La Femmes, VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 2529 and Toledo Hospital Nursing Alumni.

After her retirement, much of her time was spent in volunteer work for her church and working Bingo, the American Legion and at Care and Share.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ray G. Riems; daughter, Martha (James) Panning, of Brighton, Mich.; two sons, Thomas, of Huron, and John Riems, of Sandusky; five grandchildren, Matt, Ben, Katie, Carl and Emily; four great-grandchildren, Henry, Lucy, Charlie and Sophia; and sister, Mary Louise Sheibley, of Sandusky.

Besides her parents, she also was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Royer.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at David F. Koch Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where prayers will be recited at 9:40 a.m. Saturday, February 9, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Joe Steinbauer will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Stein Hospice Service, Inc., 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870 or to one's favorite charity.
