U.S. Congressman. He attended Franklin College, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a medical degree in 1845 and practiced medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, he served as a surgeon in the Union Army. After the war, he entered politics, was a member of the in the Pennsylvania State Senate, (1872-73), was a delegate to the Republican State convention in 1873 and to the Republican National Convention in 1876. In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until his death.
