Carl Dee Castellaw was born on September 20, 1936 in Dimmit County, Texas. He married his high school sweetheart, Hannah Umphres, on December 6, 1956. He attended Southwest Texas Junior College as well as Texas A&M University graduating with a degree in Farm and Ranch Management in 1959. At the age of 50, he returned to SWTJC and earned an associate's degree in Computer Science.
Shortly after graduating from A&M, he was injured in an oil field accident that gradually compromised his mobility, but failed to deter his zest for life. He was a master craftsman with wood, metal and leather. He was best known as a gifted gunsmith whose advice was well sought after in South Texas. He was also an exceptional teacher, mentoring many children and young adults and sharing his vast knowledge and wisdom. He was actively involved as a shooting coach and gun safety instructor for more than 50 years with 4-H in both Dimmit and Uvalde Counties and was given a lifetime achievement award for his service.
