Helen Jean M. Nugent died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at the Franklin United Methodist Community Rehabilitation Center. She was a resident of the Franklin United Methodist Community.
She was born on Oct. 14, 1934, the daughter of John Isaac and Ruth (Mather) McClelland.
On Dec. 27, 1956, she married Paul T. Nugent, who survives.
The couple had three children, Paul Jean (Gene) Barickman, Thomas James Nugent II and Ruth Nugent. She also is survived by two grandchildren, Anna Jean (Stephen) Price and David Mark Barickman. In addition, she leaves one sister, Natalie Tobin; two nieces; and a number of cousins.
She graduated from Franklin College, where she was a member of Psi chapter of Delta Zeta sorority. She earned graduate degrees from the University of Illinois, Indiana University and Michigan State University. She taught at every level, from remedial elementary through graduate courses, but her primary work was at Franklin College, where she founded and directed the Canadian studies program.
Following retirement, she served one term on the Franklin College Alumni Council.
She was a member of several honorary organizations: Phi Alpha Theta (history), Theta Alpha Phi (theater), Phi Kappa Phi (academics) and Alpha Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma (women in education). Both IUPUI and Franklin College presented her with teaching awards. She was listed in Who's Who Among Teachers, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who Among American Women, Who's Who in the Midwest and multiple times in Who's Who in America.
In addition, she was a life member of the Association for Canadian Studies (Canada), the Association of Canadian Studies in the United States, alumni associations of Vincennes University, University of Illinois, Indiana University and Michigan State University, the Scottish Society of Indianapolis, the Indiana Historical Society, the Canadian Historical Association, Washington County (Ind.) Historical and Genealogical Society, Marion County (Ind.) Historical and Genealogical Society, Argyle Township (Nova Scotia) Historical and Genealogical Society and the Yarmouth County (Nova Scotia) Historical Society.
She was a charter member of St. Andrew's Anglican Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir, served on the vestry, worked with children's education and prepared a written history of the parish.
She was also a charter member of Clan Maclellan (U.S.) and corresponded frequently with other clan and family members.
She maintained an avid interest in Canadian history and political events.
Her hobbies included reading and writing, especially in the field of history. An avid sports fan, she enjoyed watching TV broadcasts of football, basketball, baseball, hockey and curling.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin.
Services will be conducted by Bishop Rommie M. Starks at 2 p.m. Friday at the Franklin College Richardson Chapel, Monroe and Forsythe streets. Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time Friday at the chapel. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
