Engineer. As director of the World Trade Department of the New York Port Authority, he spearheaded development of the "Twin Towers", World Trade Center in New York City. Additionally, he was a significant figure in the planning of the 1964 World's Fair in New York. The son of a construction company proprietor, he earned a bachelor's degree in Analytic Mechanics and a master's degree in Physics from Fordham University. Following service with the United States Navy during World War II (he also served during the Korean War), Tozzoli joined the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (1946), initially as a junior engineer and advanced to civil engineer. During the latter, he oversaw development at both Port Newark and Newark Airport. By the early 1950s Tozzoli was elevated to Manager of the Marine Planning and Construction Division and in 1962, he was named Director of the World Trade Department. While serving in this capacity, he was responsible for planning, construction, rental and operation of the World Trade Center. At that time, the project was regarded as a marvel of modern achievement. In 1987, he retired from The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to focus his efforts as President and Board Member of the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA). Additionally, he was nominated multiple times for the Nobel Peace Prize as a result of his work in bringing North and South Korea together in relation with the WTCA. In a twist of irony, Tozzoli was en route to the World Trade Center for a meeting on September 11th, 2001. He never reached his destination, as he was delayed by traffic. However, he witnessed from a distance the horrors that unfolded on that fateful day.
