Carolyn E. (Fadale) Demarest, 103
Registered Nurse & WW II Navy Veteran

Carolyn Elizabeth (Fadale) Demarest was born 23 December 1909 in Jamestown, NY. She was the daughter of Frank Anthony Fadale and Josephine Andolina, who immigrated to Jamestown from Valle Domo, Sicily. She passed away 6 Feb 2013, at the Lutheran Home & Rehabilitation Center in Jamestown, New York.

Carolyn graduated from Jamestown High School, where the late actress Lucille Ball was an underclassman at that time. Carolyn went on to study nursing at Crouse-Irving Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1933. She did post-graduate work at the Westchester County School of Nursing and Syracuse University. She worked at a hospital in Albany, NY and as a Nurse Supervisor at Geneva (NY) General Hospital, before serving as medical surgical supervisor at Syracuse General Hospital. Carolyn went to work at University Hospital in 1941, as orthopedic supervisor.

In 1942, she enlisted in the Navy Nurse Corps and was commissioned an Ensign. She reported to the Brooklyn (NY) Naval Hospital on 22 September of that year. While stationed in Brooklyn, she was detached with a select group of nurses to outfit the new St. Albans Naval Hospital in Queens, NY. It was an assignment she took great pride in part because of the respect she had for the others who were chosen along with her.

It was at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital where she met her future husband, David Richard Demarest (#10-70). He was a Fire Controlman 2nd Class and was a patient there since 18 August 1942, having injured his foot making a leap while assigned to the Destroyer USS Bailey. She married David Richard Demarest on 30 January 1943, in Ridgewood, New Jersey. In that day, married women were not allowed to continue to serve in the Navy. She received an honorable discharge and returned to her family in Jamestown, NY and continued to practice as an R. N.

At the end of the War, her husband returned from the Pacific and they made their home in Ridgewood, New Jersey. She went to work for visiting nurse service there, making visits to homes, often in concert with local physicians.

After the 20 November 1950 death of her husband Carolyn and her children moved back to Jamestown. Continuing her career as a Registered Nurse at WCA Hospital in Jamestown, she raised her children at 18 Strong Street, her home for the remainder of her life.

In the latter part of her nursing career she was for about 10 years the plant nurse for the former Automatic Voting Machine Company. Her responsibilities included tending to workers at several of the company's locations. She was forced to retire from that position at age 62, and immediately went to work in the former Fenton Park Nursing Home in Jamestown, retiring from there at age 72.

Mrs. Demarest was a lifelong active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she volunteered at the Thrift Shop and belonged to the Bishop Overs Guild. She was also a member of the National Audubon Society, Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, Marvin Community House, Business and Professional Women, Chautauqua County Graduate Nurses Association, 100 Member Club of Jamestown High School and the Crouse-Irving Alumni Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers Anthony, Vincent and Lewis. She is survived by her Daughter, Hon. Carolyn E. Demarest, Justice of the NYS Supreme Court, and a son, Jonathan Demarest, a Granddaughter, Rachel Demarest Gold, two Grandsons, Alexander Demarest Gold and Joshua Demarest Gold, and seven great grand children, Caelen, Ronen, Aidan Arianna & Logan Gold, Hunter Antonio Longo, and Aleena Afzal-Gold.
.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in the chapel of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Virginia Carr, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Westfield, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb 8, in the Lind Funeral Home.
