HORACE "DENT" GRANT
Ferges-Horace "Dent" Grant, 93 of Ferges passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family at 2:45 P.M. Monday December 10, 2012. Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday December 13, 2012 at the Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City with Pastor Ted A. Hartley officiating. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Marion V.F.W. American Legion and the Illinois Army National Guard. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the First United Methodist Church Food Panty.

Dent was born on November 28, 1919 in Herrin the son of Herbert and Mamie (Sanders) Grant. He married Alma Auline (Smith) on September 14, 1941. They were married 71 years. She survives.

Dent was a WWII veteran where he served in the army. He was very proud of his time served. He was a member of the U.M.W.A, where he retired from Zeigler 4. He was known as Pappy to his fellow coal miners. Dent was a member of the Marion V.F.W and American Legion of Herrin. Dent attended the First United Methodist Church of Johnston City.

He is survived by 5 daughters, Nancy Montgomery and husband Jack of Herrin, Sandra Goddard and husband Maynard of Benton, Donna Curry and husband Bob of Johnston City, Janice Holloway of Harrisburg, and Denise Ryan of Herrin; 12 grandchildren, Michael Montgomery and wife Caroline, Brett Montgomery and wife Linnie, Debbie Barnhart and husband Lewis, John Goddard , Janine Curry, Chad Curry, Jeff Moore, Jaimie Harner, Keelan Holloway, Kyle Ryan, Nicole Ryan, and Tyler Ryan; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters , Mary Ellen Hinckle of Goreville and Delores Kelton of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters; 3 brothers; and a very special grandson, Bobby Curry.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern Illinois and a very special care giver, Cathy Beagle.
