GLADSTONE - Myra Marie Helen Harris, 90, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter on Jan. 17, 2013. Myra was born May 17, 1922, in Saginaw, Mich., the daughter of George and Margaretta (Keegan) Prebo. She was a 1940 graduate of St. Andrew High School.
On Dec. 29, 1941, she married Erwin J. Harris at St. Josephat's Catholic Church in Saginaw, Mich., on the 25th anniversary of her parents. Four years later they moved to Trenary, where Myra was active in St. Rita's Church as secretary of St. Rita's Guild, taught CCD, and was the church organist. Myra was also a member of the Mathias Township School Board.
In 1966, Myra returned to school and obtained her LPN at Bay College in 1968. She was employed at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba for 12 years. During her years there, she had the joy of seeing four of her grandchildren born, two of which were under her care while she was in the OB department. In January of 1980, Myra and Erwin moved to Largo, Fla., where Myra continued nursing at Sun Coast Hospital until her retirement in 1988. After 25 years in Florida, they moved back to the Gladstone area in 2003.
Myra did scrapbooking before it became popular. Each grandchild had an album with photos, their drawings, letters, thank you notes, and a year in review for each year. They were given the albums when they graduated from high school. She also enjoyed writing short stories and wrote bios of her parents and in-laws in addition to her own autobiography.
Myra was known as the family historian. She had a great interest in genealogy and researched both sides of the family. Other interests were playing bridge, crossword puzzles, and solving the CRYPTOQUIP in the daily newspaper. Myra and Erwin also took great pride in attending and cheering their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in sporting events.
Survivors include: Erwin Joseph (EJ), her husband of 71 plus years; six children, daughter, Kathaleen (Joseph) Illig of Gladstone; sons, Thomas (Beverly) Harris of Trinity, Fla., William Harris of Vietnam, Tim (Linda Sprengeler) Harris of McHenry, Ill., Herb (Gail) Harris of Franklin, Wis. and George Harris of Baltimore, Md. Also surviving is special daughter-in-law, Mary (Coe) Harris of Escanaba; ten grandchildren, Kelly Jones, Brian Harris, Guy Harris, Danielle Hall, Thomas Ulatowski II, Jennifer Harris, Jonathan Harris, Hillary Wucherer, Angela Doyel and Le Thi Thuy Hang; nineteen great-grandchildren, Jessica (Jones) Nystrom, Rachael and Fisher Jones, Kylie, Kevin and Greg Harris, Mackenzie, Hannah and Noah Harris, Emma and Ethan Hall, Max, Mally, and Mason Ulatowski, Liam Love, Margo Harris, Ben Wucherer, Thao Ngan and Boa Huynh.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her only brother, Stanley Prebo; a great-grandson, Matthew Thomas Ulatowski; and son-in-law, Charles Busnuk.
