Dana E. "Pete" Whitney died at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, Wednesday, February 9, 2011. Pete was born on September 29, 1923, in Hanover, NH, the son of the late Arthur Turner and Edith (Stoddard) Whitney.

He was raised and educated in Meriden, NH, graduating from Hanover High and Kimball Union Academy.

He served stateside during WWII with the Army Air Force as an instrument Pilot, serving overseas to Newfoundland, achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant Flight Officer. Pete received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Overseas Service Bar and the Good Conduct Metal.

After serving in the military, he continued and enjoyed flying a single engine airplane in NH by keeping his private pilot license until 1995.

He studied Civil Engineering in Chicago Illinois then worked as a Mechanical Draftsman Engineer for the NE Telephone & Telegraph Co. Pete also worked for Manchester Sand & Gravel, Perini Construction and as a Supervisor for Frank W. Whitcomb Construction. He retired in 1989.

Pete was a lifetime member of the Lions Club and Aircraft Owners, Pilots Association (AOPA).

Pete married the former Rumalda Rodriguez in 1949, sharing 62 years together until her passing on November 6, 2010. He was an avid family man, raising three children and believing in principles of love, compassion, truth, honesty and education.

He especially loved Golden Retrievers, initiating his own kennel of pure breeds called "Dansue." Other hobbies include bee keeping, skiing, Saturday night steaks on the grill and house hold projects.

Pete is survived by two adoring daughters, Anne Williams with Bill Cockfield of Hooksett, NH, and Sue and Pete Dalpra of Penacook, NH; five grandchildren, Andrea Drolet, Megan Dervan, Cara Britton, Brandon Williams, and Melissa Cockfield; his two great grandchildren, Edward and Colm Dervan; and nieces and nephews.

His oldest child, Dana D. Whitney predeceased him of several years.

Burial will be in Mill Cemetery, Meriden, NH.
