On February 19, 1938, Bert married Mary Pauline Bonner, daughter of Lula May Willard (1894 – 1964) and Paul Young Bonner (1888 – 1974). Bert and Pauline were married 72 years; Pauline preceded him in death on October 15, 2010. On July 18, 1945 Bert entered the United States Navy, receiving training at San Diego and was stationed at Shoemaker, California. Bert served in the Panama Canal Zone, Nine Mile Point, Algiers, and New Orleans and on the U.S.S. Achilles (ARL-41). Bert was awarded the Victory ribbon and American Area ribbon. He was honorably discharged at the United States Naval Personnel Separation Center in New Orleans, LA on April 18, 1946 as a Fireman Second Class.
Prior to entering the Navy, Bert was a welder for Brown and Root, building Old Ironside ships and landing barges. After WWII, Bert worked for Chicago Bridge building Army tanks. Later, Bert worked for Halliburton building offshore drilling rigs with living quarters.
Bert was a retired self-employed automobile mechanic and welder. During the 50’s and 60’s he worked for local Buick, Ford, Chevrolet and tractor dealerships as a mechanic, a career he enjoyed very much.
Bert had a deep love for music and played the piano, organ and steel guitar and played with groups while working in Houston and Fairfield.
Left to cherish his memory are his two children, one daughter, Gloria Jeanette Wright and husband Dennis of Streetman; one son, Gary Bert Lambert. Bert and Pauline had two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Capps Funeral Home was in charge of the graveside service on February 21, 2015.
