Smithfield Physician Succumbs
Dr. George Hugh Warren 69, of Smithfield, died Monday morning, Oct.
19, in a Newport News Hospital, following a long illness. A native of
Isle of Wight County, he was the son of the late George H. and Mrs.
Sue Latimer Warren. Dr. Warren graduated from the University of
Richmond and received his medical degree from the Medical College of
Virginia in 1925. He came to Smithfield in 1927 as a public health
officer for Isle of Wight County and following the death of Dr. L.C.
Brock, in the same year, took over his practice. He retired from
active practice in 1967. He was a member of the Smithfield Baptist
Church, the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of
Virginia, and the Tri-County Medical Association. Surviving are his
wife, Mrs. Virginia Cofer Warren; one daughter, Mrs. Georgia W.
Liebold, Smithfield; one son, Dr. George Hugh Warren, Jr., Newport
News; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday,
Oct. 21, at 3 p.m., from the Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, by the
Rev. Warren F. Taylor, pastor of Smithfield Baptist Church. Interment
will be in the Ivy Hill Cemetery, Smithfield. Pallbearers will be B.A.
Batten, Jr., W. Henry Sykes, Jr., G.W. Whitley, Jr., G.W. Warren,
Frank Cofer, Edwin Darden, John Huber and Wilbur Mountjoy.
