William volunteered for Civil War army service in Company B, 188th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for a one-year term of service. He was discharged by Order of the War Department at Cincinnati, Ohio, August 22, 1865 and applied for an invalid pension for his army service, August 23, 1866. This is probably in error and should read 1865. The pension was issued as Certificate #107289. An Edward H. Lyman applied for a minor's benefit December 18, 1890 in Michigan as #107289. It was not issued. At the time of his death from chills and fever he resided on Prospect in Cleveland. He was buried September 1, 1865.

He is buried in a lot with several other Lyman family members--Judge Darius, Laura, and Lucy A. Lyman.
