Ronald A. "Murph" Kells-Murphy entered eternal life on Jan. 29, 2013 at Desert Regional Memorial Hospital in Palm Springs, Ca. Murph was a resident of Barstow, Ca. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut on Dec. 31, 1936. He graduated from 8th grade at Sacred Heart School in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1952. He graduated from Grossmont High School in La Mesa, Ca., in 1956. He also graduated from Barstow Community College with an Associate of Arts degree in 1976. Growing up in Connecticut, Murph was a paper boy and a shoe shiner. While attending high school in La Mesa, Ca., Murph played football, basketball, and ran track. Upon graduation from high school, Murph joined the United States Marine Corps on June 26, 1956 and received an Honorable Discharge as Lance Corporal (E-3) 1stForReconCottqBn, 1st MarDiv, FMF on March 8, 1963. Murph was a talented artist and was once offered a job as an illustrator at Walt Disney Studios. He painted signs and store front windows for many local businesses through the years. He was a cook at several local restaurants, a humane society officer, volunteer fireman, volunteer citizen on patrol for Barstow Police Department and Sheriff departments. Murph was the Boy Scout of America Scoutmaster for troop 69 for 25 years, followed by Scout Commissioner. He served as Safety Patrol Crossing Guard at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic School. He was a life long member of the Knights of Columbus. Murph formed the 'Desert Bow Hunters Archery Club' in the early 60's. He volunteered at Desert Manna. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Center. He was known for his creative attire, friendliness and humor. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Celia (Aguayo) Kells-Murphy; son, Brian Kells-Murphy; daughter, Teresa Brand (Rodney Sr.); grandson, Rodney Brand Jr.; granddaughter, Chiffon Brand, all of Barstow; and brother, Fred Kells-Murphy of The Villages, Florida. He is preceded in death by his son, Gerald Kells-Murphy; grandson, Justin R. Brand; his father, his mother, four brothers, and one sister. Rosary will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 9 a.m. followed by Mass at 10 a.m. Arrangements provided by Mead Mortuary, 36930 Irwin Road, Barstow, Ca. Burial will be at Mt. View Memorial.
