My brother, Jim

Jim was born in Weiser, Id. on June 10, 1930. I was 5 years old and together with my brother, Glenn and sister, Dorothy we were sent to the neighbors house to spend the day. The kind lady fixed lunch for us and told us to eat with our mouths closed!

When we finally went home we had a baby brother. He was so cute with red curly hair and he soon became spoiled rotten. If he didn't get his way he would throw himself on the floor and kick his feet. When Mom was gone we would put a chair over the top of him, sit on it and listen to him scream.

He was 9 years old when our Dad died and four yours later our Mother died in a tragic accident. Jim lived with my younger brothers and sisters and stepdad until I was married and then he ran away from home to live with his big sister and her new husband! Surprise Surprise. He was on our doorstep when we got home from our honeymoon!

We planned to live in a 2 room apartment till our house was built and we had no room for him so he stayed with friends in the meantime.

When he came to live with us I made him go to school. One day a Navy recruiter came to the school and Jim was very excited. He came to me and asked if he could join. I thought that would be the best thing for him and the recruiter assured me that he would get his education. So in 1947 I went with the recruiter and signed him up. He came home on his leaves and one day out of his stay, he would get dressed in his uniform and go to town to give the girls a 'thrill'.

On one of his leaves he met Sandy Baker and they were soon married. After 19 years in the service he retired in 1966 and settled in Chehalis with his wife and four daughters.

In January 1967 he went to work for the State of Washington and after retiring in 1990, bought a motor home with plans to travel. But with failing health, he had to give it up.

Jim left us in 1996, much too soon. We were especially close, as he thought of me as both a sister and a mother. His loss is deeply felt.

I love you always
Your sister, Grace (Mitchell) Fortier
