Son of Susan Anna Atkins and her first husband, John Loos. Grandson of Union General Smith Dykins Atkins of Illinois and his wife, Eleanor Hope Swain of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. On his mother's side he was a descendant of N.C. Governor David Swain and a descendant of N.C. Governor and Revolutionary War Officer Richard Caswell.

His mother married twice. Her first marriage was prior to 1900 to John Loos. Upon the breakup of that marriage, her children, including Smith, took the surname Atkins at the request of his grandfather, General Atkins.
