Paul Edward Campbell, 78, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Midland Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 11, 1926, to Roy and Bessie Campbell. He was a graduate of Breckenridge High School and excelled in all athletic programs. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was quarterback for the University of Texas in 1947, 1948 and 1949, at which time he broke two of Bobby Layne's records and led the all-star team to victory to win the 1949 Orange Bowl Title. He was later drafted to the Philadelphia Eagles.
He was an avid golfer, pilot, Medical Center Hospital volunteer and a member of the University of Texas Football Letterman's Exes.
Paul learned the qualities for success — leadership, dependability and determination.
He is survived by his sons, Paul Andrew Campbell and wife Karen of Odessa, James Patrick Campbell and wife Sherry of Odessa and Thomas Clay Campbell and wife Nancy of Midland. He had four grandchildren, Bethany Michelle Campbell, Annabelle Lee Campbell, Robert Lance Campbell and Chad Edward Campbell. He had three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his companion, Phyllis Schaefer of Odessa; and, of course, his weiner dog, Short Stop.
Paul was deeply loved by friends and family and will be greatly missed.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2005, at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Bauernfeind officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the UTPB Sports Department or St. Judes Children's Hospital.
