Ronald E. Schafer, 80, Defiance, died at 8:25 a.m. Tuesday in Laurels of Defiance. He was born July 30, 1924, in Clio, Mich., the son of Louis and Viola (Garver) Schafer. In 1950, he married Evelyn Clark, who survives. He was an auto mechanic, retiring in 1950; a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a life member of U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II and VFW Post 3360. He was a member of DAV Chapter 36 and Military Order of Cootie. Also surviving are a son, William, Brunswick, Ga.; three sisters, Donelda Roggenkemper of Defiance, Mrs. Paul (Alverna) Eis of Fort Myers, Fla., and Mrs. Paul (Lila) Layman, Lyndale, Ga.; and four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Vincent and Donald; and a sister, Glenola Blanton. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home with Rev. Kenny Marr officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens with military rites accorded by VFW Post 3360. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. today. Preferred memorials are to a charity of the donors choice.
