James was the son of Henry and Marinda Pike Pope of Vermont with siblings: Charles, Delos, and Mary. The family was living near Bowling Green, Ohio. His older brother, Perly, also enlisted although he was married to Charlotte Sizer at the time.
This is a cenotaph, he is buried in Hampton National Cemetery.
