MATTOON — Joseph William Schilling, 91, a lifetime resident of Mattoon, IL, passed away at 9:03 p.m. on February 1, 2013 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Healthcare Center in Mattoon.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 200 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 with Reverend Troy Countryman officiating. Burial with Military Rites to follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, IL, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. At that time Reverend Robert Clark will officiate A Family Remembrance Service to which the public is invited. A second visitation will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 prior to the funeral service.

Joe was born on May 20, 1921 in Mattoon, IL the son of Frank Stephen (F.S.) Schilling, Sr. and Mae (Muessman) Schilling. He married Elizabeth Ann Shaw March 7, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents, a half brother Frank Stephen Schilling Jr. and a half sister Gwen Barlo.

A graduate of Mattoon HS in 1939, Schilling attended DePauw University before studying mortuary science in St. Louis. Joseph married high school sweetheart Elizabeth Ann Shaw ("Betty") shortly before leaving Mattoon to serve in the United States Navy during WWII. Schilling served during the war with the Seabees in the Pacific Theatre. He returned to Mattoon following the war to join his father at the Schilling Funeral Home.

Joe continued his service to the country after the war by joining the Army reserves. He was recalled to duty during the Korean Conflict and was assigned to Europe to assist with the continued effort to address graves registration and military cemetery issues still lingering from WWII. He was a proud member both of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Joe served as one of the founding advisors of the SIU mortuary science school and also served as a member of the Illinois Board of Examiners on Funeral Directing and Embalming. Schilling was also a member of the Governor's Advisory Council under Gov. Richard Ogilvie and was active in state and local politics.

In Mattoon, Schilling served as a director and interim President of the First National Bank of Mattoon and participated in its growth into a regional banking power as First Mid-Illinois Bancshares. He was also a long time director of First Federal Savings and Loan of Mattoon. Schilling spent many years as a member of the Lions Club and was active in local events including fundraising for the United Way. He was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Mattoon.

Survivors include his loving wife of 70 years, Elizabeth Ann Schilling of Mattoon; two sons; William Joseph Schilling of Falls Church, VA; John Robert Schilling and wife Susan Lee Schilling of Mattoon; four grandchildren; Ryan Robert Schilling and wife Giuliana Mariana Schilling of Cupertino, CA; Jordan William Schilling and wife Kayce Ruth Schilling of Mattoon; Brittany Linn Hecker and Husband Peter Ammon Hecker of Maryland Heights, MO; Cameron Michael Schilling and fiancé Kendra Ellen Buchanan of Springfield, IL; four great grandchildren, Ayla Lilliana Schilling; Dahlia Mia Schilling; Sofia Malena Schilling and Marley Mae Schilling; cousins, Raymond Muessman of Charleston and daughters Marlene Sieben and Caroline Muessman, Harris Emmerson and wife Doris Emmerson of Birmingham, AL; brother-in-law Robert Shaw and his wife Bonnie of Boise, ID.
