Army Capt Owens was assigned to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Killed in a crash of a MH-47E Chinook helicopter off the Philippine Islands. More than a month after the crash, his body was recovered and returned to the United States. Army Capt. Owens and Chief Warrant Officer 2nd Class Jody Egnor were discovered together in their submerged helicopter by a robot submarine. Bartt was a graduate of Franklin High School in 1990 where he was a member of the National Honor Society, earned a 4.66 grade point average and graduated in the top 2 percent of his class. He was also the senior class president, ran cross-country and track, and played on the golf team. He had dreamed of serving in the military since the ninth grade and hoped someday to be elected a congressman or senator. Bartt graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1994 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Aviation and received a Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations. Shortly afterwards he married, Leah, the love of his life, his high school sweetheart and the only girl he ever dated. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), National Defense Service Medal Aviator Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Air Assault Badge; he was rated in the OH-58 A/C, CH-4D, and MH-47E. Bartt loved his country and the Fourth of July was one of his favorite holidays. His family was everything to him, he often read to his two girls, ages 4 and 2, before tucking them into bed, helped them with gymnastics and loved to roll around the floor wrestling with them. He called Christmas Eve just to listen to what the girls sounded like when they opened their gifts. His family is especially saddened because his girls are so young, that they are not going to remember him.
