According to his "First Papers for Naturalization", August entered the US at the port of Baltimore, MD in April of 1883. These papers were filed at Dodge Co., Wisconsin on Nov. 1, 1884. According to the Franklin Co, Kansas Register of Deaths, August died of stomach trouble. Death register notes age as 51.

August, Henrietta and their daughter, Augusta, came to the USA on the ship Hohenzollern docking at Baltimore, MD April 18, 1883. They were on the same ship as Herman Pohl (Puhl). Their destination was given as Wisconsin and his occupation was "mason".

Mr. August Hackstein died at his home in Lawrence, Kansas on Thursday, April 24, 1893 of catarrh of the stomach, aged about 50 years. The deceased was a highly respected resident of this city for several years, and for about seven years worked at the marble trade here. He moved to Kansas about a month ago. A wife and a daughter, Mrs. Herman Pohl of Lawrence, survive him.
