James Finley Dotson, 81, of Boone, died Monday, September 25, 2000 at Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton.

Mr. Dotson was born March 10, 1919 in Watauga County to Hiram Finley and Martha Brinkley Dotson.

A veteran of the U S Army, he served during World War II under General George Patton. He was a graduate of Appalachian State University and taught in the Catawba and Burke County School Systems and was also a salesman for many years.

Mr. Dotson was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hickory and a former member of Grace Lutheran Church in Boone. He was a mason in Snow Lodge 363 in Boone and a member of the Scottish Rite in the Valley of Winston-Salem and the Oasis Shrine in Charlotte.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Hazel Moretz Dotson, a son, two grandchildren, one brother and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Franklin Dotson, one sister, Bonnie Rogerson, one brother, Harley Ford Dotson, two half-sisters, Belle Dotson Cornett and Doris Greene Dotson and three half-brothers, Clayton Greene and Charles Greene and W W Austin.
