Harry Figgins Basse was born in 1910 in North Pomona, Los Angeles, California, where his parents owned and operated a small grocery store. Around 1920, the family moved to Orange County, where they established themselves as an early pioneering ranching family in Westminster. Harry learned about growing oranges and later managed and operated his own citrus orchards.
In 1938, Harry married LeVene Parks and two sons were born of this union, Joe Fredrick and Vincent Allen.
In 1942, Harry enlisted in the Army and served with the 12th Armored Division in Europe, fighting with Company B of the 23rd Tank Battalion. In 1945, at the "Battle for Castle Itter" in Bavaria, Lieutenant Harry Basse took command of the tank, "Boche Buster", and was awarded the Silver Star for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy".
After the war, Harry returned to Westminster and continued to manage and operate the family orange groves. At retirement, Harry and LeVene moved to the town of Bishop, California, where Harry lived a quiet life, enjoying his fishing and view of the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains. In 1991, Harry passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 80.
