Estella E. Haines Stern was born on May 30, 1869 in Port Deposit, MD, to Mary O. Currier Haines and Freeling Taylor Haines. Her father, Taylor, was a "powder monkey" and was killed at age 26 in a work explosion in Port Deposit when Stella was 4 and her brother, Leonidas Haines, was an infant. Her mother married again in 1878 to William E. Winchester when Stella was 9. Her three half siblings from this marriage were Lydia, Milton, and William Jr.

She married Cyrus West Stern on September 6, 1888. They had four children: Anna S. Stern Kelso, Ernest Maynard Stern, Roy Elwell Stern, and Iona Mary Stern Ault. Stella passed away March 23, 1955 from liver disease related to arterial sclerosis. She and Cyrus are buried at Fairview Cemetery, Coatesville, PA.

Stella and Cyrus celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at an extended family gathering at their home in 1938. The following story reported about that event was contributed by Find A Grave contributor Dan Oh!:

Downingtown- Sept. 7- Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Stern, East Lincoln Highway celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at a lawn party at their home on Sunday. The well known couple were married in Oxford, Sept. 5th, 1888, by the late Rev. Alpha Kynett. After a social afternoon enjoyed by the relatives and friends present refreshments of ice cream and cake were served. Mr. and Mrs. Stern received many useful gifts.

The oldest member of the family present was Cyrus Stern, the groom of fifty years ago and the youngest was seven weeks old Roland [Ronald] Lee Stern, a great grandchild.

Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Stern, Mrs. Iona Ault and son Coleman, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Beitler, Miss Betty Beitler, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stern and children, Earl, Doris, and Marie, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stern and son, Ronald, of Downingtown; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Kelso and daughter, Doris.
