Nellie was born at the family farm on Bird Lake in Jefferson Twp. Hillsdale, MI., the daughter of John & Mary Taylor Wallace. She was a graduate nurse from the Battle Creek sanitarium & also taught nursing at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. Nellie, along side her husband Tom came to the city of Hillsdale, MI in 1912 from Kalamazoo, MI to start the first hospital in the city. She was a pioneer in the use of the X-ray machine. Nellie watched her dreams of health care come alive over 28 years as the hospital grew and continues to grow today. The location changed 3 times. Nellie served on the Hillsdale Hospital Board for 14 years and 7 years as the active head. She resigned from her hospital duties on July 16 1940.
