Cobleskill (Schoharie County): Mr. Richard Petteys 94 of Candle Light Way died Friday May 22nd at the Albany VA Hospital.

Mr. Petteys was born December 19, 1914 in Millers Corners in the Town of Florida NY, a son of Edwin and Luella (Quant) Petteys. He was educated in the Sloansville one-room schoolhouse and later enlisted in the US Navy serving his country during WW II. Richard worked in the Construction Corps in Tennessee and Livingstonville until 1933. He worked for the former Howes Cave Cement Plant for 35 years before retiring in the 1970’s. He would later work for SUNY Cobleskill in the tool department.

Richard was a member of the American Legion Post #1261 in Schoharie, the VFW Post’s in Schoharie and Middleburgh and the First Baptist Church of Cobleskill. He also enjoyed carpentry and working on his home.

His first wife, Emma Louise (Bowers) Petteys whom he married November 11, 1937 died in 1951. His second wife, Mae Anna (Plaster) Petteys whom he married November 21, 1969 died in 1984. He then married Doris (Hogeaboon) Petteys on March 15, 1986 who predeceased him on September 14, 2007.

Survivors include: four children LeRoy Richard (Sylvia) Petteys of Ontario Canada, James Edwin (Pauline) Petteys of Ava, Missouri, Grace Marie Nikolaus of Cobleskill and Beverly Ann (Clifford) Jock of Warnerville. Seven step-children, Edward (Andrea) Williams of Owego, Robert (Luann) Wilson of Niantic, CT., Phyllis (Richard) Tefft of Cobleskill, David (Sue) Wilson of Cobleskill, Larry (Donna) Wilson of Schoharie, Barbara (Ivan) Rickard of Cobleskill and Patty Hotaling of Cobleskill. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren. Richard was predeceased by one daughter Linda Gail Bryant, a step-son Rory Tyrrell and two sisters, Evelyn Petteys and Gail VanAller.

Calling hours will be held from 6-8 PM on Thursday, May 28th at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel Street Cobleskill. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 29th at the First Baptist Church, 492 W. Main Street Cobleskill, NY. Burial will follow in the Sloansville Valley Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post #1261.
