A music lover since childhood, Mr. Stranne sang and played keyboard and guitar in a number of Marin and Bay Area bands including Cairo, Elan, The Drive and Cyn City. In the last two decades of his life he served as music director for congregations including St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Novato, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Marin City and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Mill Valley.

Brett's musical career included stints with a number of bands — often under the name, "Bret Douglas" — including his role as lyricist and lead vocalist on three albums of the progressive rock group, Cairo.

He served as the founding music director for New Faith Church, a now-defunct United Church of Christ church in Novato, before playing the piano and organ, singing and leading choirs in a range of musical styles at other congregations.

He died after a 16-month battle with cancer.
