Opal M. Pohl, 93, Lawrence, died Tuesday, December 15, 1998, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Pohl taught school in Douglas and Franklin counties for several years. She later worked in the meat and deli department at Rusty's IGA for 25 years before she retired in 1975.
She was born January 3, 1905, in Franklin County, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Lula Stover Steen. She attended Baldwin City schools, and she graduated from Vinland High School in 1923. She later attended Baker University and Emporia Teachers College.
Mrs. Pohl was a member of Trinty Lutheran Church, Trinity Service Class, Douglas County retired Teacher's Association, Rebekah Lodge and the Autumn Club.
She married Ernest A. Pohl on May 1, 1928, in Ottawa. He died in August of 1954.
Survivors include two daughters, Laurine Kersch and Mary Ann Corbin of Lawrence; a son, Marvin E. Pohl, Topeka; a brother, Orliff L Steen, Manhattan; a sister, Geneva VanValkenburg, Montezuma, Kansas; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 pm Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence. Burial will be in Worden Cemetery. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 pm today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church and sent in care of the mortuary.
