Graduated from Dartmouth and studied law. Fought in the Civil War and became captain of Company C,Fifty First US colored infantry. Also served as judge advocate through 1865. Married Grace Wooster in 1866 and practiced law in Chicago, IL. In 1870 President Grant appointed him associate justice of the supreme court of Washington Territory, becoming Chief Justice by President Hayes in 1879. Resumed law practice in 1887 and was instrumental in forming the Seattle charter, and as Chairman 1895-1913 on Harbor improvements. Active in the Baptist church, also ran for governor in 1890 as a Prohibition candidate but returned to the Republican Party. Father of Agnes, Roger Jr. Grace and Mary Rhoda, Judge Greene was a supporter of the Women's suffrage that brought women the right to vote in Washington State.
