After the death of his mother, Jacob's father takes a new wife, Christina Diehl, and moves his family to Illinois. In the tradition of German pioneer families, Jacob Jr., the oldest of 11 children, takes over the 1000 acre homestead of his father, and remains in North Carolina until his death.
His wife and mother and several children are buried in adjacent graves.
