Roman Catholic Saint. A follower of Saint Nilo, who upon the former's death attended the completion of the Abbey of Grottaferrata, of which he is thus considered its second founder, Saint Bartholomew the Younger, also known as 'Bartolomeo il Giovane di Grottaferrata' or 'Bartolomeo di Rossano', was born around the year 981 in Rossano to a noble family. At seven years of age, he was sent to the monastery of San Giovanni Calibyta in Caloveto by his parents for his education. Aged twelve, he moved to the Abbey of Montecassino where he came to know Saint Nilo. It is said that during a trip, the Virgin Mary appeared to them both and asked them to found a monastery and a church in her honour, which they did, at Grottaferrata. Following Nilo's death, Bartholomew concluded the project and the church was consecrated by Pope John XIX. Authoring several religious hymns, the life of Nilo and the 'Typicon', the liturgical code of discipline for the use of his monks, Bartholomew passed away at Grottaferrata in 1055 and was buried beside Saint Nilo at the abbey, but the exact location of the burial location has been since lost.
