John S. Hallman, 86, Punxsutawney, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at home.
He was born June 28, 1926, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late George K. and Isabelle V. (Connelly) Hallman.
On Sept. 18, 1948, he married Nancy A. (Bennett) Hallman, who survives.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Punxsutawney where he was a layman, a Sunday School teacher and a member of the choir.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Southwest Pacific Operation with submarine forces on the submarine USS Jack.
He was retired from the United States Postal Service after 33 years of service, with 17 years as a supervisor in all capacities.
He was very proud of his efforts in getting the former Punxsutawney Post Office on the National Register of Historic Places, which is now the location of the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center, which he was active in helping to establish.
He was a former mayor of Punxsutawney, a recipient of the Man of the Year Award in 2001; a committee member for the Boy Scouts of America; board chairman for the Punxsutawney Historical Society; president of the Punxsutawney Philatelic Club; member of the Personal Committee for the
involvement in the Main Street Program; member of the Committee for Regional Development; member of the Jefferson County Planning Commission; member of the Route 119 Committee; member of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Festival Committee; editorial research and cover designer for the Keystone Federation Stamp Club; an Eagle Scout with Three Leaf Clusters; past president of the Punxsutawney Lions Club; a member of the board of directors for Community Action; a recipient of the Kate Scott Award in 2012 in Jefferson County; Treasurer at the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center; and had June 28, 2006, proclaimed as John Hallman Day in Punxsutawney.
In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include five children; three sons, John Dennis Hallman, Garry Hallman and David Hallman, all of Punxsutawney; two daughters, Janett Geer and husband John and Marcia Botelho, all of Punxsutawney; eight grandchildren, Sarah Shockey, Corinne States, Rebecca Gross, Amanda Geer, Daniel Geer, Savanna Hallman, Julia Hallman and David Hallman, Jr.; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Diane Hallman; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Patrick Hallman; a sister, Evelyn Clark; and a brother, Kelly Hallman.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church of Punxsutawney, where friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
Interment will be in Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
Memorial contributions may be made, in Mr. Hallman's memory, to the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center.
