Marilyn Estey Macferran Brick was born on September 3, 1923 in Topeka, Kansas to Helen Estey Macferran and William Macferran, Jr. and died on June 29th at the age of 85. She attended public schools in Topeka and graduated from Topeka High School. In 1944, Marilyn received a B.A. in Music Education from Washburn University in Topeka and a Masters in Music Education from the University of Kansas in 1947. Marilyn taught music in the public schools in Lyndon and Topeka, Kansas and at Carrollwood Elementary School in Tampa, Florida. She also taught strings at Carthage College in Carthage, Illinois. On October 10, 1947, Marilyn married Dr. Samuel Elmer Brick in Topeka, Kansas. They had three children, John, Robert, and Sarah. Marilyn was a member of numerous organizations including Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, PEO (for over fifty years), the University of Tampa Womens Auxiliary, and was coordinator for the Town-n-Country Hospital Auxiliary. Marilyn had a lifelong love of music and played the violin and piano and was a soprano vocalist. She was active in both the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches. She sang in and directed church choirs and coordinated a church library for Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Tampa. For entertainment, Marilyn enjoyed bridge, reading, word puzzles, sewing, entertaining, music, and traveling. She will be remembered for her volunteerism, her musical gifts, her ability to make everybody feel comfortable, her intelligence, her teaching abilities, her exceptional social skills, and her love for her family. She was preceded in death by her Father William Macferran, Jr. (1973), Mother Helen Estey Macferran (1981), and son John Brick (2001). She is survived by her husband of the home, Sam; son Robert and wife Yvonne Brick of Clearwater, Florida; daughter Sarah and husband Steve Archer of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law Pamela Brick of Valrico, Florida; granddaughters Christina Brick, Laura Brick, and Rachel Archer; brothers W. Sewall Macferran of Topeka, Kansas; and the Reverend Hervey W. Macferran of Aurora, Colorado, as well as nieces and nephews.
