Russell David "Russ" Johnson, the oldest child of Emil D. and Pearl A. (Hunt) Johnson, was born September 7, 1924, at Wausa, NE. Russell died Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Golden Living Center in Wausa, NE.

Russ was baptized and later confirmed at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wausa, NE. Russ spent his early years on the family farm near Wausa, NE. until the age 16, when he and a friend traveled to Chicago, IL. to find work. Russ landed a job in a can factory, where his duty was painting cans. He continued to work in Chicago, IL. until joining the United States Army in 1943. After going through Basic Training, Russ spent the remaining two and a half years of his service stationed in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. While serving his country, Russ worked in the motor pool, and in his furlough time, would go up into the Matanuska Valley and work for a truck gardener. At the time Russ was discharged from the Army at the end of World War II in 1945, he had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. After receiving his Honorable Discharge, Russ returned to his hometown of Wausa, nE., where on January 17, 1947, he was married to Janice Moline at Thabor Lutheran Church, Wausa, NE.. The couple was blessed with three children: Peggy Ann, Beverly Jeanne, and Douglas Alan. Russ and Janice began their married lives in Norfolk, Nebraska, but soon returned to Wausa, where they operated Johnson's Café for a time. Russ then began working for Milton Berg doing roofing, and later worked as a salesman. In 1950, Russ and Janice moved to her parents' farm and lived with them for a year, then moved to their own farm northeast of Wausa, NE., where they fed cattle and raised hogs. In 1968, Russ and Janice left the farm and moved into Wausa, NE., where he went into a partnership with Carlson Home and Auto. After four years, the partnership was dissolved, and Russ began working for Dowling Township, doing road maintenance.

Russ was a very supportive and loving father and grandfather, faithfully attending all of his children and grandchildren's activities and events. In addition to going to dances and golfing, Russ enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family. He was always one to lightheartedly tease and joke around, and his jovial personality will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

Russ is survived by: wife of over 66 years, Janice Johnson of Wausa, NE.; daughter, Peggy (fiance Kent Schweers) Lamprecht of Elkhorn, NE., and her children, Kim DiNapoli and husband Michael, and Cory Lamprecht and wife Jennifer (their children, Paxton and Neleigh); daughter, Beverly (Dan) Munter of Wausa, NE., and their children, Tony and wife Emily Munter (their children, Avery and Jase), Brett Munter and wife Monica (their children, Griffey and Theo), and Carrie Dawson and husband Andy (their children, Taylor and Drew); son, Doug (Chris) Johnson of Wausa, NE., and their children, Erin Mack and husband Luke (their children, Hudson and Boston), Abby Fuller and husband Rusty, Jordan Johnson and fiancee Kelsey Stevens (daughter, Avery Stevens), and Carlie Johnston and husband Tanner; brothers, Dick (Jean) Johnson of Lincoln, NE. and Jim (Elaine) Johnson of Norfolk, NE.; sister-in-law, Elaine Jensen of Council Bluffs, IA. as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
