husband Otis' obituary he died July 22, 1882
Capt. Otis F Hamblen died at his residence in New Bedford,Saturday. His health had not been good for some years, but it was not until recently that serious apprehensions were entertained. He was a native of Falmouth and went to Nantucket when young to enter upon a seafaring life in the whaling business. He sailed three voyages from there,on the third being second mate on the Citizen, a new vessel. He then sailed from New Bedfors as the mate of the Sea Queen, and afterward as master of the Osecola, the Platina,in which he made a very successful voyage, the Andrew Hicks which was built for him, and the Sea Fox.He has been at home the past five years, and was agent of whaling vessels and now had the management bark Tropic Bird.Captain Hamblen was a shipmaster of excellent abilities, and on one voyage received the eighth lay, which we believe was never equaled in this port.At one time he was a resident of Foxboro'.He was an upright, honorable man, widely known in whaling circles, and universally respected. He leaves a widow and two daughters by a former marriage, the older of whom is the wife of Mr Charles H Vinal.[New Bedford Standard.
Capt Hamblen was a nephew of Mrs Gorham hallett of this village. He married for his second wife Miss Melissa Crosby,a daughter of the late Capt Philander Crosby of Centreville.
