Lee P. Roberts

Florence

It was a wonderful life. On May 17, 1918 Lee Paul Roberts was born in the small town of Velva, North Dakota. His parents were Rush Sherman and May Conklin Roberts. Growing up in Velva was like growing up in the Wild West; with buffalo sightings and playing with boyhood friend Eric Severeid.

Then came moving to the idyllic town of Clear Lake, Iowa. Those were happy times with lots of family nearby. During that time he met Charles Lindberg who had just completed an amazing flight in the Spirit of St. Louis. He also met a young Ronald Reagan who was a radio announcer in Chicago. During that time he was saddened by the death of sister, mother, and father by the age of fourteen. In spite of things that would weaken many, he met bandleader Orrin Tucker, joined the band and toured for several years as the saxophone player. (if you listen to Orrin Tucker's cd you will hear the sax of Lee Roberts on the songs "Dream").

After the band he became an investigator with the U.S. Army and eventually was stationed at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg. While there, he met and married Emma Virginia Smith of Cleary in Rankin County, Mississippi.

Next came studying law at the Jackson School of Law. At the time his little family grew with daughters Victoria Kay and May Genevieve.

Always striving to expand his horizons, he studied to become a professional engineer and worked for several companies. Still expanding, he studied theology and became a minister in the United Methodist Church. Thus came years of being an engineer during the week and pastor to small churches on the weekend.

In later years he spend time relearning to play the saxophone and picking up the guitar, ukulele, and mandolin, entertaining those who would listen to his "lifetime adventures." During this time, he was a constant source of love, support, and advice to Virginia, Vicky and May. With all his interest, his family was his real treasure. It was truly a wonderful life.

Lee Paul Roberts is survived by daughters, May and her husband Tom, Vicky and her daughter, Katie Virginia, Katie's husband, Lowell and great granddaughter, Ava Rose Elizabeth.

Services for Mr. Roberts will be held Friday August 28,2015 at Marvin United Methodist Church, Florence, MS at 1:00 pm with a visitation immediately following services. Burial will follow at Florence City Cemetery.
