Curtis Edward Keener, age 81, of Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2005 at his residence. He was born July 24, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of the late Orrin L. and Mary (Wiles) Keener. Curtis was retired from the YMCA after 36 years of employment, the last 17 of which were spent as the director of the East Cleveland Branch YMCA. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church, the Kiwanis in Cleveland and Mount Vernon, a former president of the Optimist Club in Cleveland, and a member of the Association of Retired YMCA Directors. Curtis had a love for all types of music and had been active in the church choir for over 30 years and also in the Apple Valley Singers Club.Surviving is his loving wife, Rachel (Chaffin) Keener whom he married September 11, 1948, two sons; Curtis B. Keener of Cleveland and John Robert (Bobbi) Keener of Duluth, Minnesota, a daughter Karen (Robert) Havreberg of Columbus, nine grandchildren; Laurelyn, Amanda, Max and Michaela Keener, Eiche, Erik, Christopher, Rachel and Rebecca Havreberg, two great-grandchildren; Kierstin and Brandon Havreberg, and three sisters; Carolyn (Ralph) Howard of Sunbury, Marylou (Kier) Finlayson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Marjorie (Jean) Nelson of Seattle, Washington.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a niece Cheryl and a nephew Ralph.Friends may call on Thursday, June 16, 2005 from 6-8 P.M. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 17, at 11:00 A.M. at the Gay Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. John Capper officiating. Friends may also call from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the church. Interment with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gay Street United Methodist Church.This obituary and guest registry may be viewed online at www.snyderfuneralhomes.com.
