A celebration of his life will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Elgin.

John was born July 31, 1927, in Kerrshun, Utah, to his parents, Alfred E. and Josie Mae (Marker) Fincher. He attended elementary school in Vale and continued his schooling in Baker. John enlisted with the United States Navy during World War II. He took his basic training in San Diego before transferring to the Seabees of the 28th Naval Reserves Construction Battalion Regiment. John was a logger for many years, until the fatal day when his best friend, Jim Whitney of La Grande, was killed. John then went to work for the Union County Road Department. After working there for several years, he went to work at Boise Cascade driving chip truck out of Elgin. During this time, John and Doris also owned the Durkee Cafe. John bought his own semi truck and started driving to the East Coast for a few years, then sold his truck, and started a flagging company for road construction for a few years, and then they opened up Grandma & Grandpa's Family Restaurant in Elgin.

When Doris got sick with cancer, they moved to Echo, where John drove for Cunningham Sheep Co., until he retired at the age of 72 in 1999.
