Six Year Old Boy Injured Fatally When Struck By Car Enroute To School Bus
Gregory Ray Antle, 6 years old, was injured fatally at about 7 o'clock Tuesday morning when he was struck by a car driven by Mrs. Guy Smith, Sr., as he ran across the road to board a school bus in front of his home on the Greensburg Road about a mile from town. He died from his injuries at 9 a.m. after being rushed by ambulance to the Rosary Hospital. Dr. W. W. Shepherd, Taylor County Coroner, reported that death was due to a broken neck, fractured skull, cerebral hemorrhage, internal and chest injuries and a fractured right leg. The little boy was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Veachel Ray Antle and was a student in the first grade at Taylor County Elementary School. Witnesses reported that the car driven by Mrs. Smith passed the school bus several hundred feet back of the point where the accident occurred and had turned back into the proper lane before the child started across the road. State Police Trooper Don Patterson, who investigated the accident reported that after applying the brakes, the car skidded 188 feet, or thereabouts. Wilson Thompson, driver of the school bus, testified before a Coroner's Jury Tuesday morning that the car passed his bus but that he had not put up the stop signal, although his red blinker lights were turned on. When he saw the child dart across the road, he said that stopped and could do nothing but watch the accident. The impact of the car dragged the boy 100 feet, Thompson reported, although Mrs. Smith swerved to avoid hitting him. Mrs. Richard Shipp, who had brought her little girl to catch the school bus and was parked alongside the road, also witnessed the accident and substantiated the testimony of the others heard at the inquest. In a statement made to Dr. Shepherd, Mrs. Smith reported that she was driving a little better than 40 miles an hour when she passed the bus which had slowed down as it reached the downgrade at that point on the highway. The Coroner's Jury reported a verdict of Accidental Manslaughter. No charges have been placed against Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Smith is a third grade teacher at Taylor County Elementary School and was driving to her post when the accident took place. Besides his parents, Gregory Ray Antle is survived by one brother, Barry Lynn Antle and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Dowell, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Antle of Rt. 4. Funeral services will be held this morning (Thursday) at 10:30 at the Campbellsville Baptist Church by Dr. J. Chester Badgett, Rev. Harlan Williams and Rev. Earl Pike and burial will be in the Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.
