William Ballengee (better known as Doc) was killed just after noon today at James' mill in Avis. He went below to oil some of the machinery, was caught in some manner by the belt and when discovered, unconscious, had been thrown on the floor and was crushed about the head by the belt. His jaws were broken and twisted to one side, and his face and head were otherwise badly bruised.

No one seems to know exactly how he became entangled with the belt.

Dr Miller, of the Hinton Hospital, was summoned but medical assistance was useless and he died within 30 minutes after the accident occurred without regaining consciousness.

Mr Ballengee was unmarried, about 53 years old and was a son of Lafayette Ballengee, an old and respected citizen living about one and one-half miles up Greenbrier river from Foss, on the southside. For several years he was in the employe of the Hinton Milling Co, but recently has been working for the Wm James Sons Co, at their saw mill in Avis.
