John W. West was a noted sharpshooter in the War for Southern Independence (1861-1865). He served with the "Twiggs County Volunteers," Company C, 4th Georgia Infantry, Doles' Brigade - CSA. West's battlefield exploits as a marksman earned him the sobriquet of "Kildee" by his comrades. He was wounded at the battle of Wilderness, Virginia, May 6, 1864, the minie ball striking and fracturing his right shoulder and fracturing a portion of the spinal column, passing through the left shoulder. Private West was present at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865 when Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia. In 1888 John applied for a Confederate pension from the State of Georgia. His pension applications indicate at least four dates of birth: 3/20/1841; 3/20/1842; 3/3/1843 and 3/20/1843. His precise date of death has not been determined.

The 1910 Twiggs County census indicates first wife Sarah was deceased as John was married to "Mary" since about 1906.

Wife Sara Matilda Johnson West, b. 18 Jan 1845( she was the daughter of Rev Charles Green Johnson founder of Asbury & Swift Creek Churches also helped start Prospect Church) is buried there. I think that Linnie West Martin (their daughter) b. 1871, is buried there too & maybe her husband Buck Martin." Cecil Fountain
