Violet "Vi" Abele, age 91, of Toledo, died peacefully Friday, October 29th, 2010 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo. She was born April 27th, 1919 to Fred and Anna (Bierwirth) Abele in Toledo. Vi graduated from Libbey High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She also attended Davis Business College. Vi took courses some in Traffic Management from LaSalle Ext University in Chicago. Violet began her business career at the Kroger Co. in the Traffic and Warehouse Department. At the onset of WWII in 1942 Vi was asked to accept a position of Chief Clerk with the Erie Railroad by the WMC (War Manpower Commission), to expedite shipments of grain and machinery, such as Jeeps to the East Coast intended for European destinations. At the close of the war all women who had jobs previously held by men were asked to relinquish their positions if that man returned from service. After the war Vi accepted employment at St. Vincent Hospital where she was Instrumental in forming their Medicare Program. After that project was completed she went to work for Lindel's Jewelers. It was at this time she met Mr. and Mrs. Berman and accepted a job offer from them. In 1954 Vi became vice president of the company, in charge of Internal Operations. She retired from W. Berman & Co. in 1989 after 40 years of service. Vi enjoyed going to sporting events including the World Series, the Rose Bowl, Kentucky Derby and much more. Her great pleasure was traveling. Vi visited many points of interest in Europe where she celebrated an outdoor Mass with Pope John VI, the Middle East where she experienced the Viadorosa, the Caribbean, Canada and the US. She also enjoyed entertaining, especially her Pinochle and Bunco friends. At Vi's request there will be no visitation. Friends are invited Tuesday, November 2nd at 1:00 p.m. for a Graveside Ceremony at Forest Cemetery to Celebrate her life. A friendly and outgoing person, Violet will be fondly remembered for her generosity in taking care of the needs of others. Memorial contributions may be made in Vi's name to the Toledo Humane Society or to the charity of the donor's choice.
