Lafayette was born on December 14, 1846 in Vermont to Allen Sweet and Fanny M. Taft. He enlisted in the military on August 4, 1862. He fought in the civil war for the Union in the Company B, 1st Regiment, Vermont Heavy Artillery. When he left the military on June 24, 1865, he was a corporal. He married Anna Mary Dobbins on December 31, 1867 in Whiting, Addison, Vermont. He passed away on December 11, 1914.
In the 1870 census, he was living in Lincoln township, Monroe, Wisconsin with his mother, Fanny M.; wife, Annie M.; and daughter, Myrtle. He was listed as a 23-year-old, married, white male.
In 1875, he was living in La Grange township, Monroe, Wisconsin. There were two white males and two white females in his household.
In 1880, he was living in La Grange township, Monroe, Wisconsin with his wife, Mary A., and children, Myrtle and Carlos A. He was listed as a 33-year-old, married, white male. He was a farmer.
