J.L. Clarke, P.O. Momence, born in Ontario County, N.Y., May 6, 1832, is a son of Lorenzo and Laura (Turner) Clarke. In November, 1854, he settled in Momence and engaged in business as a contractor and builder during the season, and in winter followed the profession of teaching. Practically, as a surveyor, Mr. Clarke is much sought after. He was married at Kankakee, May 2, 1865 to Miss Mary L., daughter of Lyman Wooster, one of the county's pioneers. Of the four children sent to bless this union, three are living. For many years, Mr. Clarke employed his time as a farmer on the old home place. He enlisted as a volunteer and served three years in the war of the Rebellion. On September 1, 1881, Mr. Clarke formed a partnership with C.L. Wooster & Co., in buying, shipping and storing grain. He resides at present in the village of Momence.
