Billy Joe Elkins, age 79, of Whitman, departed this life on Monday, January 28, 2013, at his home.

Born May 8, 1933, in Logan County, he was the son of the late Frank Nelson and Fonnie White Burgess.

Mr. Elkins was a retired coal miner, a graduate of Logan High School, he served in the USMC during the Korean Conflict, he was a member of the Maryetta United Baptist Church and was a member of the Men's Fellowship and choir. Billy Joe also was a lifetime member of the LRMC Auxiliary, and he worked with FEMA.

He was also preceded in death by a son in law, Denver Stratton.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Avonell Bias Elkins, daughters, Lois Ellen (and Bart) Gore of Whitman, Billietta (and Dave) Adams and Bernice Ann Stratton all of Pittsburgh, PA., grandchildren, Lindsey Gore, Emily Gore, Denise Tomblin, Aaron Stratton, Chandra Burton-Bailey, and Joseph Charles Burton, four great-grandchildren, Jayden Bailey, Dominic Tomblin, Johnny Burton and Jackson Burton. Billy Joe leaves behind many other relatives and good friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2013, at the Maryetta United Baptist Church at Verdunville, with Pastor Lonnie Gore, Jr. and Rev. Barney Goins officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens at Godby, WV. Military graveside rites to be conducted.

Visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church.
