US Congressman. Born in Wartrace, Bedford County, Tennessee. He served three terms in Congress from 1949-1955. Mr. Sutton served in the United States Navy from 1942 to1946 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart with an oak leaf cluster. In 1954, he lost the Democratic nomination for the US Senate to Estes Kefauver, but was elected sheriff of Lawrence County, Tennessee, in 1962. In 1965, Mr. Sutton was imprisoned and served almost 10 months of a one-year sentence for violating a federal probation order. He was put on probation after pleading no contest to charges of being involved in a three-state counterfeiting ring in 1964. After retiring from public life Mr. Sutton moved with his wife to Michigan where he enjoyed his later years restoring antiques. He died in Berrien Center, Michigan.
