Gaylord Lew Ayers was born on July 11, 1935, in Madison, South Dakota, the son of Milton B Ayers (1913–2008) and Virginia D (Thompson) Ayers (1917–2000).

He was married to Brenda Gale Primm (1943–2021), the daughter of Mack T Primm and Icie (Jackson) Primm.

Gaylord held a Masters Degree in Communications - radio and television - from the University of South Dakota.

He moved to Nashville to accept a position as Production Manager at WDCN, Nashville's educational TV station and was quickly promoted to Program Director. He also wrote several scripts and served as narrator for local production films as well as teaching communication seminars at universities. He had previously held positions with television stations in Minnesota, Kansas and South Dakota. After a successful career, he retired at the age of 62.

Gaylord was 77 years old when he passed away on January 27, 2013 at Saint Thomas Hospital, Nashville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, his father and by his sister Carol (Ayers) Leiby, while survivors included his wife a married brother, a Leiby brother-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held at Cheatham County Funeral Home , and burial was in Ever Rest Memorial Gardens in Pleasant View, Tennessee.
