Born in Nemirov, Ukraine, Russia; completed his undergraduate degree with University of Kiev in May 1921; then became an assistant with the Faculty of Agriculture at the Polytechnic Institute of Kiev and later the University of Leningrad. Came to the USA in 1927 as a student with his wife and chose to remain when the spurious environmental doctrines of Stalin's pet geneticist, T.D. Lysenko, became Communist dogma. His work at various American universities and research institutes earned world acclaim. His book Genetics and the Origin of Species (1937) was the first significant synthesis of Darwinian evolutionary theory and Mendelian genetics and his Mankind Evolving (1962) greatly influenced anthropologists. He published almost 600 works, including more than a dozen books. Cause of death: heart attack, in San Jacinto, California.
