Edwin G. Arthur, 87 of Shepherd and former Sanford and Alpena resident, died early Saturday morning, Oct. 28, 2006 at the Maplelane Senior Care Center in Shepherd.

He was born on March 4, 1919 in Indianapolis, Indiana, son of the late Ezra and Gertrude (Fandrey) Arthur. On August 9, 1939 Edwin married the former June M. Ducharme in Alpena. She predeceased him on Oct. 15, 2006. He had worked at the Abitibi Corporation as an engineer, retiring in 1981. He had served with the United States Navy during World War II, serving in the Philippines and Pearl Harbor. Edwin and his wife June moved to Sanford from Alpena in 1990 to be near their daughter. The two most important things in Edwin's life were his love for his God and his family. He loved to invent things for disabled people. In his earlier years he was an avid baseball player and had been middleweight champ in boxing. While in Alpena he was an active member of the Word of Life Baptist Church serving as deacon, trustee and had sang in their choir. He was currently attending Our Redeemer Church and had been a member of the Ambassadors, and had served as a trustee.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral and Committal services will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006 from Our Redeemer Church in Midland, Pastor Mark Burks will officiate with burial in Sanford Cemetery. Edwin's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street , Midland on Monday from 4-8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Military honors will be presented by the Midland Area Veterans.
